A little bragging won’t hurt

The Momentum Files #2

Step into the spotlight without the struggle

High-achieving and executive-level professionals often feel stuck when it comes time to promote themselves and the work they do.

They consider “brag” a four-letter word (it literally is one, but I mean the other kind of four-letter word).

This becomes a huge challenge for those who need to showcase their talents and abilities in order to transition careers, pursue their entrepreneurial goals and achieve desired growth and advancement.  It’s a conversation I frequently have with my clients.

But here’s a reassuring little secret I’ve learned about the art of self-promotion:

You can confidently promote yourself in a way that is both professional and – brace yourself - comfortable.

And it’s a key component to your success.

Here’s the common concern.

“If I promote myself or my business, people will see me as smug, self-absorbed, arrogant or boastful.  Maybe I’m better off letting my good work speak for itself.”

The result?

You shrink.  You blend.  You hold back and refrain from sharing who you are, what you do, how you help people and why you love it.  This is a huge lost opportunity to connect, inspire and help others as only you can.  It can also hold you back from a desired promotion, salary increase or new business venture.

The solution?

By creating your own personal brand statement, you learn to get yourself out there and step into the spotlight authentically and professionally.

Here are a few of my favorite tips (no bragging required):

  •  Take time to examine your professional accomplishments.

Think about where you have been, what you have done, what you have to offer and what makes you unique.  Let this build your confidence and provide you with interesting and relevant stories to share.

  • Focus on the value and benefit you provide.

Let people know the value you bring and why it’s important to you.  When you put the focus on those you help and why it matters, you keep the attention on the work and accomplishments while also giving people a glimpse into your priorities and values.

  • Remember heart and connection.

The best self-promoters have a way of infusing memorable stories with head and heart.  Aim to convey your message in a way that showcases your business expertise and the human being behind it all.
