How Career Club helped a client take a big step

A real-life example of easy action that worked!

“I'm not sure anything will come of this but DAMN it felt like professional networking!”

This was one of my clients/Career Club members after she took immediate action following a Career Club working session we did on networking. (We talked about how, why, and exactly what to do to expand your networking activity, with each participant jotting down action steps they could take).

Let me share her story:

Two years ago, a friend connected her with someone who hired her to do a video project for his client. She stayed in touch with him through her monthly video emails… which he opened now and then. He hired her again the following year for a similar project.

BIG takeaway: Even if an email subscriber only occasionally reads your messages… they can still be paying close attention! You never know what will come of nurturing these relationships!

Our Career Club discussion about networking inspired her to be more intentional and more confidently take consistent action to let people know who she is and how she can support them (be still my heart!).

She decided to combine intention + action and reached out to her former client in the form of a beautifully worded and strategic email that reignited their relationship and clearly communicated her desire to collaborate once again.

With permission from my client, I’m sharing the exact email she sent out so that you see a real-life example of how something simple, easy and convenient can lead to exciting opportunity and deeper professional relationships.

And, yes, this totally counts as networking!

Here’s what she wrote:

Hi [Name],

I hope you're doing well and enjoying this solstice period. Seattle is finally getting some sunshine and the city is in a very good mood.

A while ago you asked about Explainer videos and, while I was confident at the time that I could do it, I didn't have any portfolio proof to share with you. So, I'm sending you a link to the animated explainer video we just finished for [Company].

We initially assumed I would create a demonstration video but as I understood the work, it became clear that animation would serve the purpose better.

I learned the system, scripted the video, storyboarded it and created it. The client is very happy with it and we have 8 more videos scheduled. Their whole team was surprised how well the animation communicates to their users. And the animated dog at the end is the owner's beloved pet so that was nice, too.

This email is me raising my hand in case this kind of work comes up again. From understanding complex systems to delivering on the animation, I really enjoy the work.

This. Is. Networking.

As fear-inducing and overwhelming as the thought of networking is for so many people (understandably!), what it comes down to is simple.

It’s raising your hand and making known your intentions and how you can best serve others.

It’s connecting with people. Building relationships. Growing your visibility. And sharing and learning information.

I love this email and am so pleased for my client. She doesn’t know what – if anything – will come of it. There’s no guarantee. But several things were accomplished simply by taking action.

My client…

➡️ felt productive and like a true networking professional after sending this email.

➡️ reminded her former client about her great work and showcased her ambitious strides to learn more advanced systems and create even more impressive results.

➡️ opened a door to potential new collaborations (and referrals!).

➡️ realized how easy networking can be – and how incredibly beneficial it is when you combine strategy + intention + action.

➡️ became inspired to find other low-key and convenient ways to raise her hand and raise awareness about her business, her services and her talent.

Working with my clients and seeing them take action and make progress – which happens every day – brings me such joy and excitement.
